Where to Start: How to Read the Bible with Purpose
Scripture is God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16), but let’s be honest - it can be difficult to understand. Written thousands of years ago in Hebrew and Greek, it’s filled with poetry, prophecy, history, and Good News. However, it isn’t always straightforward. Jesus spoke in parables so that only those truly seeking would understand (Matthew 13:10-11). So, where do you start? Here are a few tips that will help you kickstart your Bible reading in 2025:
Start with the right mindset -
The Bible isn’t just information; it’s transformation. It is God revealing Himself to us. So, approach it with humility, curiosity, and a willingness to apply what you learn. Don’t forget, you have the Holy Spirit to help. James 1:5 – "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him."
2. Read with Context -
Understanding the background deepens your insight and avoids misinterpretation. Get context by asking questions as you read: “Who was this written to?” “What was happening in their world?” 2 Peter 1:20-21 – "No prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation… but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit."
Begin with the Gospels –
If you want to get to the core of why you should read the Bible, start with the words directly from Jesus. The Gospels show you exactly who Jesus is, why He matters, and His words bring context and fulfillment to the rest of Scripture. I recommend starting with the Gospel of John - John 20:31 – "But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name."
Engage with it –
Don’t just read— get involved by seeking more understanding - engage. Ask, what does this teach about God, His character, or His people? How does this apply to my life? Take notes, pray over it, and let it sink in. Hebrews 4:12a “For the word of God is alive and active.” and Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Grow with Guidance – The Bible was never meant to be studied in complete isolation. There will always be someone ahead of you in faith to learn from and someone behind you who can benefit from your wisdom. This is mentoring discipleship and it is a biblical practice. Acts 8:30-31 - "Do you understand what you are reading?" Phillip asked. "How can I," he said, "unless someone explains it to me?"
