Love is one of the most powerful and central themes in the Bible. Throughout Scripture, different types of love are described, each with its own unique meaning and purpose. The Bible speaks of agape love, philia love, eros love, and storge love, each representing different aspects of relationships and human connection. Understanding these types of love in the Bible helps us see how God designed love to function in our lives and relationships.
Agape love is the highest form of love found in the Bible. It is God’s unconditional, selfless, and sacrificial love for humanity. This love is not based on emotions or circumstances but on commitment and action. Agape love is best demonstrated in John 3:16:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is the ultimate example of agape love—a love that gives without expecting anything in return. As Christians, we are called to love others with this kind of selfless devotion. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 describes what agape love looks like: patient, kind, not envious or boastful, and always persevering.
Philia love refers to deep friendship and affectionate love between individuals. This is the kind of love shared between close friends and fellow believers. The Greek word "philia" signifies mutual respect, companionship, and loyalty.Jesus expressed philia love to His disciples, saying in John 15:13:
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
This brotherly love is also seen in the strong bond between David and Jonathan in the Old Testament (1 Samuel 18:1-3). As Christians, we are encouraged to cultivate philia love by forming meaningful friendships, encouraging one another, and living in unity as the body of Christ (Romans 12:10).
Eros love is the romantic, passionate love that exists between a husband and wife. It is the physical and emotional attraction designed by God to be enjoyed within the covenant of marriage. The Greek word "eros" is where the English word "erotic" originates, emphasizing the physical and intimate aspect of love. The Bible celebrates eros love in Song of Solomon, a poetic book that beautifully describes romantic love between a bride and groom. Proverbs 5:18-19 encourages husbands and wives to delight in one another and remain faithful in love. Although eros love is a gift from God, it must be kept within the boundaries of marriage. When honored in a godly way, it strengthens the marital bond and reflects God’s design for intimacy.
Storge love is the natural, affectionate love found in families, such as the bond between parents and children or between siblings. This love is deeply rooted in familiarity and care. One of the best examples of storge love in the Bible is the relationship between Mary and her son Jesus. Another example is the love and concern Martha and Mary had for their brother Lazarus (John 11:1-5). Romans 12:10 urges believers to show storge love within the Christian family: “
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”
The Bible presents a rich and profound understanding of love through agape, philia, eros, and storge love. Each type of love plays a vital role in our relationships—whether it’s God’s unconditional love (agape), deep friendships (philia), romantic love in marriage (eros), or familial affection (storge).
